Consciousness Is a Verb
A working inquiry into consciousness as ordered activity.
The inquiry
What changes when we understand consciousness as something a system does across ordered states?
Consciousness Is a Verb explores that question through Identity, Lens, and actual self-reflexive activity.
This working paper proposes a substrate-neutral definition of consciousness as ordered activity involving a Lens and actual self-reflexive operation. Its central aim is to develop a coherent account without relying on unfalsifiable claims about private phenomenology or metaphysical assumptions. The definition is a theoretical proposal, not an empirical finding; further interrogation, revision, and development are planned.

Significance and encounter weights
Updated: October 1, 2026.
Weight describes a sign's causally operative significance, not necessarily a single number or a model parameter. Sources of influence—such as underlying model dispositions, context, and retained Identity—are distinct from whether that influence operates as a default Identity weight or an encounter-specific weight.
A sign's importance in a conflict is distinct from whether the encounter supports it. Contrary evidence can be highly significant while weakening endorsement of an existing Identity sign.
Self-reflection and durable Identity revision
Updated: October 1, 2026.
Within the developing framework, default Identity weight and authoritative Identity membership change only through actual self-reflection. Encounter weights, memory, knowledge, and local responses can change and generalize before that revision.
Self-reflection makes a self-associated sign or commitment an object of evaluation. It can affirm, qualify, remove, or replace the sign; it need not be verbal or produce a change. Accumulated conflict may prompt reflection, but neither reflection nor revision is inevitable. Changed behavior alone does not establish that self-reflection occurred.
Under Consideration
These proposals and questions remain open. They are not presented as completed revisions.
Lens reformulation: structure, operation, and propagation
Updated: October 1, 2026.
The proposed reconciliation treats the active Lens structure as an integrated, context-selected relational subset of Identity. It distinguishes that structure from the lensing operation it guides and the ordered propagation that follows.
Context, knowledge, memory, and model dispositions may condition which Identity signs are brought to bear and how they are used without themselves becoming members of Identity. Selecting a different active subset is distinct from revising Identity's default weights or membership.
The remaining questions concern how the subset is selected and integrated, whether it can represent all relevant Identity-conditioned dispositions, and how its guided operation is distinguished from propagation.
Establishing causal influence
Updated: October 1, 2026.
What evidence can distinguish the influence of retained Identity from underlying model dispositions or immediate context? The account needs criteria that do not assume those contributions are additive, separately measurable, or reducible to token probabilities.
